Nor’easters are storms along the East Coast of North America, with northeast winds over the coastal area; hence the name Nor’easter. These violent storms are typically a threat between September and April. According to www.weather.org, the storms bring precipitation in the form of heavy rain or snow, as well as winds of gale force, rough seas, and, occasionally, coastal flooding to the affected regions. With this in mind, we have compiled a few tips to help homeowners and business owners prepare their properties for Nor’easters.

  1. Check all outside areas surrounding your home for unsecured objects, including retractable awnings, and anchor such objects down as high winds pose potential for property damage.
  2. Turn your refrigerator and freezer to a colder setting. If you lose power, refrigerated items will keep cool; lessening the possibility of food spoilage.
  3. Tie-down and secure material and loose debris at construction sites; to lessen the potential for adjacent property damage.
  4. Check your gutters to ensure they are not clogged with leaves or debris to alleviate water damage.
  5. Should you experience property damage, contact United Public Adjusters and Appraisers to survey the damage and submit your property insurance claim.

While many residential and commercial property owners are not aware of what a Public Adjuster is, Education is key when negotiating and preparing a claim for damages with your respective insurance company.
