Common Damage Caused By Water Main Breaks

You’ve probably seen it on the news — a water main breaks leaving streets, cars, homes and buildings underwater. It looks like a major disaster and is definitely a situation you never hope to find yourself in, right? Well the reality is, you just never know when water pipes will burst and you could quickly find yourself in deep water, literally.

Scenario #1: Your Possessions Are Unaffected

This is the best-case scenario should a water main break. In this situation, a broken water main may flood nearby streets and it may even creep onto some outlying properties, but the water doesn’t do much in the way of damaging your personal possessions. While it could cause some major inconveniences in terms of travel for a little while, it’s best to be thankful that your vehicles, home, and family members remain unscathed.

Scenario #2: Some Outdoor Possessions Are Affected

In this case, a water main break in the immediate vicinity does some damage to things like your vehicle(s), your garage and maybe even your deck or patio. The inconvenience level is more intense if this is the case and now you’re left with some personal property that could be severely affected by water damage. Still, things could be worse, but it’s best to count your blessings and call in a public adjuster to assess the damage right away.

Scenario #3: Your Possessions Are Severely Damaged

This is the worst-case scenario — where a water main break does substantial damage to both the outside and the inside of your home or building. As was the case in a recent Lincoln Square NYC water main break, cars could be left in a muddy, watery mess, and floodwaters could enter basements and lower-level areas of homes, apartment buildings and businesses and cause major destruction, or even a loss of business operations. Not to mention the severe delays this type of disaster caused as a result of flooding to both roadways and subway lines.
