Manhattan Condo and Co-Op Owners- Are You Prepared for Hurricane Claims?

Plan & Prepare Document

The hurricane season can wreak havoc, causing billions of dollars of property damage. Now, especially during this time of national emergency due to COVID19, New York City families should take extra precautions to prepare for natural disasters. According to FEMA, in New York City alone, the potential for flood damage risk and extensive hurricane damage claims is extremely high. Therefore, those living in Manhattan condos/co-ops cannot be complacent by thinking that their structures are safe from potential storm damage. In this article, United Public Adjusters, a leading public adjusting firm, offers these tips to help families make an emergency preparedness plan, so they can confidently face whatever the 2021 Hurricane season delivers.

Step 1: Be Prepared

  • Review the NYC Emergency Management tips on getting prepared.
  • Download the free Red Cross Emergency App for safety tips, severe weather alerts and more.
  • Make copies of documents you’ll need such as your homeowner’s insurance policy, deed, birth certificates, passports, social security cards, etc. and store in an easily accessible watertight container.
  • Create a detailed list of valued possessions, including receipts of purchase and photos if possible. This will make hurricane insurance claims easier to document.

Step 2: Make a Plan

Based on updates from the Red Cross Emergency App and local sources, you’ll know if you can shelter in place or if emergency evacuation has been mandated.

STAY:

  • Gather two weeks of emergency supplies that include non-perishable food, and bottled water. Don’t forget a can opener.
  • Be sure to include cell phones/chargers, extra cash, flashlights, masks, first aid kit, and disinfecting wipes.

GO:

  • Pack three days of emergency supplies including non-perishable food, can opener, cell phones/chargers, batteries.
  • Several changes of clothing, masks, soap, disinfecting wipes, soap and toiletries.
  • One month supply of any prescription medications.
