When visitors think of Long Island, our miles of unspoiled white sandy beaches immediately come to mind. There is truly no other place quite like Long Island’s South Shore, however those immaculate and inviting oceanfront destinations do not maintain themselves. In fact, Long Beach sponsors a weekly beach cleanup, known as the Long Beach Cleanup, staffed entirely by volunteers, who work hard to help maintain the Town’s pristine and inviting beachfront for visitors and residents alike. Recently, those volunteers included several United Public Adjusters & Appraisers’ staffers, President and CEO Philip Maltaghati and Licensed Public Insurance Adjuster, Colleen Nitowitz among them, who at the invitation of the Philanthropy Network of New York (PNNEWYORK), took to the sands, to help to keep this coastal community’s best natural asset clean and inviting for all.
The Long Beach Cleanup is a local community organization that hosts weekly beach cleanups to remove litter and debris to keep it out of the ocean, as well as to maintain the pristine quality of the sand. One goal is to keep plastic litter in the form of discarded beverage bottles out of the Atlantic Ocean. Last year alone, these cleanups, which last only an hour per session, removed about 3,000 lbs of paper and plastic litter and debris. Worldwide, there is already an estimated 75 to 199 million tons of plastic waste in our oceans, with 33 billion pounds of plastic entering the marine environment every year.
“The efforts by the Long Beach Cleanup volunteers support the existing waste management and recycling infrastructure as well as keep the beaches clean and inviting for individuals and families,” notes Philip Maltaghati. “Our team from United Public Adjusters & Appraisers gladly did our part to help preserve this attractive location for residents and visitors alike. Not only was this a ‘feel good’ outing for our team, but also demonstrated how important preserving the natural beauty of Long Beach and other communities also sustains the local environment,” he concludes.
The Long Beach Clean Up is a worthy community initiative that is always looking for more volunteers. All ages are welcome. You can learn more or to sign up by visiting the organization’s website.
